Water Governance, Institutions and Conflicts in the Maasai Rangelands

Water scarcity in Narok county, Kenya may be attributed to demographic pressures, land-use changes, environmental degradation and the effects of climate change. This article combines methodologies from history political science investigate how local communities cope with water scarcity. In so doing, we consider institutions, both indigenous modern, mitigate conflict over access control sources. Cases are presented sites irrigation development projects or plans. We find that change has little do conflicts Narok, but more important factors privatisation commoditisation formerly common-pool resources, challenges failures modern governance mediating between Maasai (pastoralist) non-Maasai (agriculturalist) groups. Indigenous institutions still have a place resolution protection.
